David Woods, industrial, welding and systems engineering, served on a National Academy of Engineering/Institute of Medicine committee that issued a report outlining how the U.S. health care industry has neglected engineering strategies and technologies that have revolutionized quality, productivity and performance in many other industries. The Committee on Engineering and the Delivery of Health Care’s report, “Building a Better Delivery System: A New Engineering/Health Care Partnership,” is published by the National Academies Press.

Jennifer Evans-Cowley was appointed professional development officer for the Ohio chapter of the American Planning Association and education chair of the Information Technology Division of the association.

Alan S. Litsky, orthopaedics and biomedical engineering, has been elected secretary-treasurer elect of the Society for Biomaterials. In his new position he will chair the Finance Committee for the next two years and serve as secretary-treasure for the following two years.

Sheikh Akbar, materials science and engineering, is serving on the steering committee of the first United States-Japan bilateral conference on “Sensor Systems,” sponsored by the U.S. National Academies in cooperation with the Science Council of Japan in Tsukuba, Japan, Feb. 28-March 2.

Dorota Grejner-Brzezinska, civil and environmental engineering and geodetic science, was appointed as a USA representative for two projects within the Geodetic Infrastructure of Antarctica program under the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research. The two projects are the Atmospheric Impact on Global Navigation Satellite System Observations in Antarctica in relation to geophysical research and in situ Global Navigation Satellite System Antenna Tests and Validation of Phase Centre Calibration Data.

Hazel Morrow-Jones, city and regional planning, was chosen to represent the Leibnitz Institutes of Germany in a panel discussion on German/American research collaborations at the American Association for the Advancement of Science national meetings.

Lisa Tilder, architecture, was named East Central director of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture.
